We all know fall is truly upon us once we receive the notice for preschool pictures. Documenting our children on their journey in early education will most likely produce an audible “Aw!” for years to come. I have picked up a few styling tips over the years to help make these photos memorable and most importantly fun for both you and your child.
When Styling, More is Better
When it comes to photography in general, more is better. The camera tends to make things look more subdued and drowned out. This is where you can get creative and do more than you would on a “normal” day. Adding layers of clothing such as a shirt with a vest, jacket, or blazer creates a more complete look. Overalls or rompers with a long sleeve shirt under them are also a great way to layer.
Textured clothing pieces work well too, such as tulle skirts, pants that have a sheen or a pattern. Accessorizing with ties, bow ties, hats (dressy, like a fedora), suspenders, hair bows, jewelry, and scarves can really help bring the outfit to life through the camera lens.
Get Their Input
We want our kids to feel comfortable and be a part of the process too! A good way to do this is by giving options for them to choose from. “Would you like to wear the jacket or the vest?” “The pattern or stripe shirt?” “The pearl or red necklace?” Giving them options allows them to take ownership and tends to eliminate a possible power struggle on picture day.
I hope this gives you some new ideas that will make school pics this year enjoyable and memorable!
